A REMARKABLE GEOLOGICAL FEATURE
Located on the edge of the Great Rift Valley, the Ngorongoro Crater is easily Tanzania’s most remarkable geological feature. The unique ecosystem of the Crater supports one of Africa’s densest populations of wildlife, making for fantastic game viewing in an even better location.
Formed by the collapse of a giant volcano many millennia ago, the Ngorongoro Crater is the world’s largest intact dry caldera. The Crater was declared a UNESCO World Heritage site in 1979, and has also been voted one of the Seven Natural Wonders of Africa.
Measuring over 16 km wide with towering forested walls over 600m high, this magnificent natural arena features marshland, grassland, forest and swamp, with Lake Magadi nestled at its heart. This shallow salt lake is a wildlife magnet and one of the best spots in the country to see stunning pink flamingos.
Predators abound on the Crater floor, with spotted hyena, golden and side-striped jackal, lion, leopard and cheetah commonly seen. The open grasslands house large herds of buffalo, wildebeest, zebra and Grant’s and Thompson’s gazelle, whilst eland and bushbuck graze in the Lerai forest. You’ll also find Tanzania’s healthiest population of black rhino.
Animals here are famously unfazed by the presence of safari vehicles, which allows for incredible up close encounters and photos. When you are not encountering wildlife in the Crater itself, you can take to the surrounding Ngorongoro Highlands to soak in the scenic beauty of Northern Tanzania.
