Copan
A domestic flight will zip you over to Copan where you can browse around the town’s tiny streets lined with interesting shops, cafés and period architecture. Or, if you’d prefer, you can take a tour of nearby coffee and cardamom plantations. But the main reason for visiting Copan is to see the UNESCO World Heritage Site with its Mayan ruins and monuments, its tunnels and hieroglyphic staircase. You’ll be accompanied by a knowledgeable archaeologist and have time to immerse yourself in the excellent museum.
Stay: Two nights in a standard room at the Hacienda San Lucas.
Roatan
From the ruins of the Mayan civilisation a couple of short flights will take you to a very civilised way of relaxing. At Roatan you’ll be able to stretch out on fine white sand, close your eyes to the sun and do absolutely nothing but laze. Unless, of course, you fancy a spot of whale watching, scuba diving on one of the world’s largest coral reefs, hopping over to another island or visiting an iguana farm and a local fishing village.
Stay: Three nights in a one bedroom bungalow at Barefoot Cay.
Pico Bonito
Another short flight will take you to La Ceiba, back on the mainland, where you’ll be shown to your hotel. From here you can discover the secrets of the little-visited Pico Bonito National Park – one of the largest in the country. This is a place of diverse habitats; including mountain landscapes, dry lowland regions, cloud forests and dense jungle so untouched you’ll believe you’re the first person to discover it. Look out for jaguars, wild pigs, noisy monkeys and throngs of exotic birds while you’re trekking, but if you take the white water rafting option, look out for the river!
The following day will see you snorkelling from a 22 foot panga and lunching in picture postcard Cayo Cachahuate. On your final day you’ll visit the Cuero y Salado Wildlife Refuge to track indigenous animals like howler and white-faced monkeys, crocodiles, caiman, sloths, iguanas and turtles.
Stay: Four nights in a superior cabana at the Lodge at Pico Bonito.
You’ll fly from La Ceiba via Miami and take your flight home.
