Arrive in Kigali where you will make a road transfer to Volcanoes National Park, or Parc National des Volcans. The three-hour journey passes through beautiful terraced hillsides, a scene typical of Rwanda’s landscapes. You’ll arrive at Virunga Lodge, a luxury eco-lodge overlooking the shimmering lakes of Ruhondo and Bulera. The Virunga Volcanoes provide an awe-inspiring backdrop.
The next day you will experience the highlight of a visit to Rwanda – gorilla trekking. Hiking through the light mountain forest on the slopes of the Virungas can be tough, but getting to observe mountain gorillas at close range is well worth the effort. As you walk, you should also keep your eyes peeled for golden monkeys.
During your stay there will be time for visits to the Dian Fossey memorial and walks to pretty lakeside villages.

One of the most popular activities in the area is chimpanzee trekking, but you’ll also have a chance to spot black and white colobus monkeys, grey-cheeked mangabeys and colourful birds like the giant hornbill, great blue turaco and red-breasted sparrow hawk. Other activities include walks to waterfalls, mountain biking, kayaking and interactions with the local community.
