Okavango Delta and Moremi

the dazzling jewel in Botswana’s safari crown

The Okavango Delta is the dazzling jewel in Botswana’s safari crown. This unique wetland ecosystem supports an incredible mix of wildlife, from the Big Five to beautiful rare birds. The Moremi Game Reserve, with its varied habitats, is the region’s finest game viewing area.

Covering over 15,000 square kilometres in the Kalahari Desert, a safari in the UNESCO-listed Okavango Delta is an experience you won’t forget.

The world’s largest inland delta, this immense network of waterways, lagoons and tree-lined islands is fed by the Okavango River. These game rich flood plains attract a tremendous diversity of wildlife, with lion, elephant, buffalo and leopard all present as well as more unusual species like the lechwe antelope. With over 250 bird species recorded there is also plenty to keep dedicated twitchers occupied.

Although game drives in open 4WD and walking safaris are available, one of the best ways to explore this wetland paradise is by a traditional dugout canoe known as a mokoro. Poled along by your guide through papyrus reeds and carpets of water lilies, you can discover the delight of the delta’s hidden channels.

The highly regarded Moremi Game Reserve protects nearly a third of the delta and is considered one of the best game viewing areas in Africa. Chief’s Island is probably the richest area of Moremi, largely dry and renowned for its prolific game. Depending on seasonal water levels, some camps will offer a variety of safari experiences, whilst others specialize in just water or land activities.
