Zambia is at its best in the dry season (June to November). It’s a period characterised by hot days and cool nights, clear blue skies and incredible wildlife viewing. The spectacle that is Victoria Falls can be seen on its own during the wet season, when many camps close their doors, or in combination with a safari in the dry season.
In June the rivers are full and the foliage is lush following the rains. As many camps have just reopened they are usually much quieter, and you can often get a superb deal. Zambia’s safari season kicks off in earnest in July, and all camps across the South Luangwa, Lower Zambezi and Kafue are open. Temperatures are on the rise, but it can get cold in the mornings and evenings.
The warm, dry weather continues into August and September, a fantastic time to embark on Zambia’s famous walking safaris. Wildlife viewing is at its peak as animals start to congregate around the remaining rivers and waterholes. Carmine bee-eaters arrive in September and flock to the river banks in their hundreds. October is the last month of the dry season, and whilst wildlife viewing is still excellent, high temperatures mean that safaris are best enjoyed early on and later in the day.
The rains arrive in November and continue on until May. This is known as the Green Season, and as well as being a superb time for bird watchers and walkers with plenty of beautiful scenery, it also offers excellent value for money.
