If, however, you want to explore lush forests and verdant vegetation, head straight to the Ngorongoro Conservation Area, the world’s largest volcanic caldera and sanctuary to an extraordinary proliferation of wildlife. Nearby lies Lake Manyara, where you can’t miss the pink flamingos that skim the surface of the country’s biggest soda lake, or the area’s famous tree-climbing lions.

For boat trips and birdwatching, make your way south to two of Africa’s largest and least exploited wildlife sanctuaries. Herds of elephant, buffalo and roan antelope roam the hills and rock-strewn landscape of the mighty Selous Game Reserve, while Ruaha National Park protects a truly untamed landscaped that has changed little since the days of the early European explorers.
