At over 22,000 square kilometres Kafue is the largest game reserve in Zambia, however sees relatively few visitors with large tracts of the park totally unexplored. Unspoilt by the effects of mass tourism, those who do visit this part of the country are rewarded with exciting game viewing across a variety of habitats.
The terrain of the park ranges from the lush Busanga Plains in the north to riverine forests, with the meandering Kafue River dividing the park from north to south.
Each of these habitats supports a wealth of species making for incredibly diverse game viewing. Predators abound in the Busanga Plains, with excellent sightings of cheetah, leopard and lions – who are frequently seen lounging in fig trees.
The southern reaches of Kafue are traversed by blue wildebeest and a number of rare antelope species, whilst the park’s waterways are home to pods of hippos and huge crocodiles. Nearly 500 different bird species have been counted in Kafue, making it one of the best spots in the country for bird watchers.
