Covering over 9,000 sq.km in Eastern Zambia, the South Luangwa National park rests in a wide rift valley forming a world-renowned wildlife sanctuary. Coursing a path through the park, the Luangwa River is the heart of a network of oxbow lagoons, streams and floodplains that attract huge concentrations of game.
Hippos and crocodiles wade in the water, elephants and buffalo herd around the river to drink whilst lions and leopards eye their prey on the banks. Endemic species such as Thorneycroft giraffe, Cookson’s wildebeest and Crawshay zebra also make an appearance.
Wildlife viewing doesn’t stop there, with the fertile valley supporting over 400 different species of bird, including cranes, raptors and yellow-billed storks. Keen birders should consider visiting during the ‘emerald season’, when the valley is transformed by the rains into a lush green paradise and fills with colourful migratory species.
The park is considered the spiritual home of the African walking safari after it was pioneered here in the 1950s, and is still the main activity at many of the bush camps.
