If you’re used to the impatient bustle of a busy UK city, Adelaide will come as something of a shock.

Its tempo is laid back, its people are friendly and welcoming and its streets wide and sunny. Perfect for walking round and catching the mood of the place. Outside the city boundaries lies another surprise; the Barossa Valley is a sophisticated wine growing region with any number of wineries and great potential for discovering little known classics on private tasting tours. After the boutique vineyards you’ll visit the exotic wildlife of Kangaroo Island with its diverse birdlife, huge numbers of marsupials, seals and sea lions.

Suggested extension: Our suggested itinerary can be easily added to one of our other luxury southern modules, such as Sydney, Blue Mountains and Hunter Valley and Hunter Valley, Melbourne and Great Ocean Road or perhaps one of the luxury resort islands. Adelaide

Flying to the other side of the world usually takes two calendar days.

Your exploration of South Australia begins in Adelaide, recognised as one of the country’s friendliest and most elegant cities. Adelaide is surprisingly compact as well, meaning that most of its main attractions are within easy reach of each other, and a slow, easy walk will show you what the city has to offer.

Stay: One night at The Mayfair.

The Barossa

Just a short drive from the suburbs of Adelaide lies one of Australia’s most respected wine growing regions. The Barossa was first established by Prussian immigrants over a century and a half ago, so you can expect to be travelling through a region rich in quaint, historic houses and antique shops. You can take to the various walking trails, play golf on some beautiful courses or visit boutique art galleries and alpaca farms. On your second day you’ll have time to browse, or take the option of a tasting tour around some of the region’s fine wineries.

Stay: Two nights in The Louise, a luxury vineyard retreat.

Kangaroo Island

From wineries to wildlife. As you might expect from its name, you’ll see plenty of Australia’s iconic marsupials on Kangaroo Island. But what you might not expect is the richness of the wildlife and the diversity of the species that abound on this natural menagerie – some of them seldom seen or even extinct on the mainland. There are, for example, over 5000 wallabies to every person on Kangaroo Island. There are also possums and koalas in stunning natural habitats like Flinders Chase National Park, and birds ranging from cockatoos to ospreys. Along the coast at the aptly named Seal Bay you’ll encounter seals and sea lions.

Stay: Three nights in the Southern Ocean Lodge or in one of Lifetime Private Retreats’ luxury houses.

Extension:
It’s decision time. Will you combine this tour of South Australia with another itinerary; Sydney, Blue Mountains and Hunter Valley, for example? Or will you travel back to the airport for your return flight home?
