One of the most popular destinations in all of Europe, Spain’s Andalusia region beckons with sandy beaches, idyllic countryside, the rugged Sierra Nevada and multiple UNESCO World Heritage Sites. Not forgetting upmarket boutiques, lavish villas and 3,000 hours of sunshine per year...

Combining pretty landscapes with fascinating history, Andalusia is best known for its ‘golden triangle’ – Seville, crowned by an immense Gothic cathedral; Granada with its magnificent Alhambra Palace; and Cordoba, whose star attraction remains the Great Mosque of Mesquita. Andalusia was ruled by the Moors for almost eight centuries, and their architectural influence can still be felt across the region’s cities and hilltop citadels.

If you wish to broaden your horizons, you can head further inland to the so-called ‘frontier towns’, with Jerez de la Frontera the one for flamenco and sherry bodegas, and to the famous ‘pueblos blancos’ or white villages, which are made up of almost Cycladic houses, cobbled streets and narrow alleyways. Food is another of Andalusia’s treasures, with ancient olive groves, fresh seafood and innumerable tapas bars to indulge in.

The best beaches can be found on the Costa de la Luz, a dreamy section of the Andalusian coast extending from Tarifa in the south to the mouth of the Guadiana River. But you can also spend time exploring the diverse landscapes of Costa del Sol with its innumerable golf courses and stylish resorts of Marbella and Puerto Banus.
