Between October and December Bhutan’s skies are clear and the sun is shining, making it a wonderful time for visitors. Temperatures tend to dip in January and February, but the weather is still dry and lasts until about April. The valleys are usually warmer, and thanks to the cloudless skies you can get excellent views of the Himalayas. If you’d like to see Bhutan in full bloom, then visit in the late spring for a chance to witness the country’s valleys and hillsides carpeted in bright, colourful rhododendrons.

From May you can expect a rise in heat and humidity levels. It’s a rewarding time for photography as the landscape is still flowering. In June comes the arrival of the monsoon which typically ends in August, but can sometimes stretch into September. For those who don’t mind the occasional shower sightseeing is still possible, and sometimes the rains will only occur at night.

October to November and March to April are the optimal months for trekking in Bhutan; the temperatures are pleasant and perfectly suited for mountain walks. For those interested in seeing the rare black-necked crane, your best chances are in the Phobjikha Valley. The cranes migrate here from the Tibetan Plateau each winter, and can be spotted in the region between October and February.
