majestic mountains, verdant valleys and traditional farmhouses

Punakha lies at the heart of Bhutan in a breath-taking region of majestic mountains, verdant valleys and traditional farmhouses. The perfect destination for adventure lovers, there are plenty of opportunities to explore the surroundings from trekking to white-water rafting.

Located within a picturesque and fertile valley, Bhutan’s former capital has a pleasantly warm climate thanks to the lower altitude.

The Punakha Dzong, arguably the most beautiful dzong in all of Bhutan, is located at the confluence of the Mo Chhu and Po Chhu rivers and is the centrepiece of the province. The structure was first built back in the 1600s, and stands proudly today as the second oldest dzong in the country. Though impressive from the outside, the interior is equally charming and filled with ancient relics.

You may also want to visit the Chimi Lhakhang, a splendid 15th century shrine dedicated to Drukpa Kuenley, the ‘Divine Madman’.

Mountain biking and trekking are great ways to admire the unspoilt landscape of Bhutan and enjoy the fresh Himalayan air. The Samdingkha Loop Biking Trail is a must for keen bikers; this 7km route will take you through quaint towns and charming rural areas, ideal for immersing yourself in the culture of the region.

For those who love the rush of adrenaline, it’s hard to beat white-water rafting. See Punakha from a unique perspective and take in the jaw-dropping scenery of the valley as you ride thrilling rapids down the Mo Chhu and Po Chhu rivers.
