WONDERFULLY DIVERSE
Weaving through the majestic mountainscapes of the Canadian Rockies, the Rocky Mountaineer is one of the world’s great, classic rail journeys. But you should also consider staying at a bear lodge in the Great Bear Rainforest, a helicopter ride over the Columbia Icefield and a visit to the immense Niagara Falls.
Here’s our Top 10 to help you narrow down your to-do list.
VISIT TOFINO ON VANCOUVER ISLAND
Hire a car from Vancouver and take the ferry over to Vancouver Island, driving to the west coast and Pacific Rim National Park Reserve. Here you can walk along beautiful rugged beaches, surf, go black bear and whale watching, sea kayak or just relax. Your stay can be as adventurous as you choose.
RIDE THE ROCKY MOUNTAINEER THROUGH THE ROCKY MOUNTAINS…
…to Vancouver or vice versa. With three different routes to choose from, you can take a break from driving and relax in luxury while spotting wildlife and learning about the history of the region via onboard commentary.
Go for GoldLeaf and indulge your senses with gourmet meals and expansive views through the panoramic windows of a bi-level glass dome coach – complete with an outdoor viewing platform for optimum photos.
STAY AT A BEAR LODGE
Getting close to a wild bear in its natural habitat is the ultimate Canadian wildlife experience. And where better to make these memories than in the Great Bear Rainforest (home to the finest bear watching lodges), where you’ll be able to view these bears from a safe distance as they forage, hunt and play.
The best time to go is during salmon spawning season in September and early October for an abundance of grizzly and cub sightings.
VISIT ONE OF THE “TOP 5 LIVEABLE CITIES IN THE WORLD”
Vancouver has it all: mountains, sea, diverse culture, parks, award winning restaurants… we could go on. We suggest exploring Stanley Park either by bike or on foot, stopping by the aquarium and the indigenous totem poles.
If you’re feeling adventurous, take a seaplane ride with Harbour Air for a fabulous birds-eye-view of the city, sea and mountains. For families with children, the Aqaubus will take you over to Granville island for ‘a magical escape within the city’.
STAY AT A RANCH FOR AN AUTHENTIC CANADIAN EXPERIENCE
If you are unable to travel to the Calgary Stampede in July, you can always stay at a dude ranch for that true Canadian cowboy experience. Expect to enjoy plenty of horse riding as well as plenty of other fun outdoor pursuits such as fly fishing, paddle boarding, kayaking, archery and hiking.
HELICOPTER OVER THE GLACIERS AT THE COLUMBIA ICEFIELD
Described by some as one of the most spectacular helicopter flights anywhere in the world, this journey offers outstanding views of the largest ice field in North America’s Rocky Mountains.
Enjoy visits to North America’s hydrological apex and the Continental Divide, as well as three major icefields for a breathtaking air adventure.
EXPERIENCE TIDAL WONDERS AT FUNDY NATIONAL PARK
Opened in 1950, the park protects a rugged coastline and more than 25 waterfalls, but it’s best known for its incredibly high tides (at the Bay of Fundy, the tides have been known to rise up to 16 meters!).
At low tide, you can walk out over a kilometer onto the ocean floor and at high tide you can kayak at Hopewell Rocks. There are plenty of hiking trails around but for the more adventurous, head to the Nova Scotian side of the bay and try Tidal Bore Rafting for some serious rapids with a twist.
GET AROUND SANTIAGO DE CHILE
A truly spectacular sight. Horseshoe Falls on the Canadian side is particularly well worth a visit. Whether you do a day trip from Toronto or stay in the charming town of Niagara on the Lake, this iconic waterfall is definitely worth including in any East Coast itinerary.
EXPERIENCE THE MARITIME CHARM OF FOGO ISLAND, NEWFOUNDLAND
Include a unique experience in your Atlantic Canada self-drive and take the ferry over to Fogo Island to stay at the award winning Fogo Island Inn, built on the principles of sustainability and respect for nature and culture. Enjoy whale watching and cod fishing in the summer months, and skating, skidooing and cross country skiing in the winter.
PRACTICE YOUR FRENCH IN QUEBEC CITY
Not a sprawling metropolis like Montreal or Toronto, Quebec City on the Saint Lawrence River can easily explored on foot. Visit the old town’s cobblestone streets on a guided walking tour and learn about the history, architecture and rich culture of this French speaking province.
