SCENIC LAKES AND LUSH GREEN VALLEYS

An hour from Montreal and bordering New England. The atmosphere of a British colony. Picture postcard villages and quiet towns. Exceptional, year-round resorts, scenic lakes and lush green valleys.

Take a trip south east of the vivacious city of Montreal and, after about 70 km, you’ll find yourself on the edge of New England, in a lovely region known as the Eastern Townships. You can blame the British for the unimaginative name; it dates back to the empire’s system of land division that placed administrative efficiency above romance!

The countryside, however, has an innate beauty that belies the name. Crystal clear lakes mirror the snow-clad peaks of the surrounding mountains. Quaint churches with soaring spires nestle in meadows amidst mature trees. Rolling green valleys stretch out towards the horizon, broken only by a scattering of rural villages and time-untouched towns.

Historic settlements like Kowlton, Frelighsburg and Dunham were largely founded by Loyalists to the British Crown. Year round, lake-side resorts like North Hatley and Magog also portray their English origins, but the lakes themselves were named by the Abenaki people; Massawippi and Memphrémagog.
