Land of the Northern Lights and sunshine at midnight

Ever seen a narwhale? Want to come face-to-face with a polar bear? Fascinated by the idea of midnight sun or the Aurora Borealis? You should take a tour that includes Whitehorse, the Alaskan Highway, Fairbanks and Dawson City.

To gain an idea of the vastness of the Yukon, consider this. Whitehorse is its capital city, and the next city of any size is actually Edmonton, in Alberta. But you’re unlikely to be popping over for a bit of shopping; it’s over 2000 km away. The Yukon is so far north that it doesn’t get dark in summer, and in winter the skies are illuminated by that most wondrous natural phenomenon, the Northern Lights. Even the polar and grizzly bears are bigger here, thought to be an evolutionary strategy to combat the harsh conditions.

Yet in the midst of this gigantic wilderness there are some unrivalled experiences. The Alaskan Highway, for example, runs from British Columbia to Fairbanks and is generally acknowledged by aficionados as one of the world’s epic road journeys. Wildlife enthusiasts will also appreciate the Yukon. The wilderness of Kluane National Park and Reserve is so impressive it is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

The region also has history. Dawson City was at the centre of the late 19th century’s famous Klondike Gold Rush. So your luxury, tailor-made holiday to Canada could easily take in a gold-panning tour and a visit to an old-time casino.
