Like most of the locals on Fiji’s main island – Viti Levu – he seems genuinely delighted to meet someone from the ‘mother country. Of course, Viti Levu’s tremendous Coral Coast also plays its part; over 80 km of gorgeous beaches, crescent-shaped bays and tropical vegetation. It is, in fact, one of the largest fringing reef systems in the world, and possibly the most beautiful.

Unless, of course, you’re talking to someone from Vanua Levi or Taveuni. They’ll insist – with some justification – that luxuriant rainforests, shaded groves of coconut palms, pine woodlands and an astonishing array of gorgeous bird species make the Northern Islands the best.

The best except for the Southern Islands, of course. The Mamanucas and the Yasawas. Offer you the chance to cruise aboard white yachts, from one deserted white beach to another. You can dive to an unspoiled world teeming with colour and life, meet the resident bronze shark of the Big W, swim in the Blue Lagoon…
