Kota Kinabalu, or KK to the locals, is a fantastic place to kick off your adventure through Borneo. Gateway to wildlife rich national parks and dazzling coasts, stay a while in Sabah’s capital to discover a melting pot of cultures and some divine cuisine.
Located along Sabah’s western coast, Kota Kinabalu is more than just an entry and exit point to Borneo. Boasting a thriving arts scene, welcoming locals and an array of culinary delights, it’s worth taking the time to explore the city.
The city’s museums offer a fascinating insight into Borneo’s history, whilst the central handicraft market is the perfect spot to pick up a souvenir or two. In the evening the city comes to life in the famous night market where hawker stalls serve an array of mouth-watering street-food.
KK’s main attraction however is its proximity to beautiful beaches. A short boat ride from the coast, the Tunku Abdul Rahman Marine Park has five tropical islands where visitors can enjoy swimming in turquoise waters and snorkelling amongst exotic, colourful fish.
If you like a challenge, why not tackle the 2-day ascent up Mt Kinabalu – Malaysia’s highest peak. Although the summit is over 4,000 metres high, only a reasonable level of fitness is required to reach the top. Leave early so you can arrive in time to watch the sun rise over the jungle.
