Best Time to Visit Mauritius

Thanks to its subtropical climate, Mauritius boasts sunshine, clear blue skies and warm temperatures for the majority of the year. Rain, apart from in the Chamarel Mountains, is only really expected in January and February due to cyclones coming in from the Indian Ocean. Despite the chance of rain, the Christmas and New Year period is still a popular travel time with many people seeking some winter sun over the holidays. Heavy downpours – which help to clear up the humidity – is often followed by sunshine.

One of the best months to experience all Mauritius has to offer is May, with fewer crowds as well as discounts to take advantage of. The humidity levels are low, and temperatures are still nice and warm – from the mid to high 20°Cs. July and August are typically busier due to the summer holidays in the Northern Hemisphere. The trade winds also arrive resulting in temperatures being lower than in May, with highs of around 25°C. You may find you need a warmer layer for the evenings in June, July and August.

By September the trade winds will have subsided and temperatures start to pick up again. October is usually the island’s driest month, with temperatures reaching 28°C. In November, just before the arrival of the tropical rains, you can expect less reliable weather with heat and humidity levels both rising.
