DESERT PLAYGROUND
A rolling sea of mighty red dunes and desert, Namibia’s Sossusvlei is located within the Namib-Naukluft Park. These wind sculpted dunes are some of the world’s highest, and shift in colour as the day stretches from dawn to dusk. A large salt and clay pan nestled in the Namib Desert, the dunes that surround Sossusvlei form one of Namibia’s most beautiful landscapes. A dream for photographers, the dunes are particularly striking in the bright light of dawn and as the sun sinks behind the desert.
The dunes of Sossusvlei can reach dizzying heights, and if you climb to the top you will access unbeatable views over the region. Why not tackle the aptly named Big Daddy, which at over 320 metres tall is the highest dune in the Sossusvlei region, or opt for the smaller Dune 45. As you explore look out for scuttling tok tokkie beetles and lizards.
Most visitors choose to explore the dunes on foot; however there are other options available such as quad-biking, scenic flights and hot air balloon safaris. You can also wander along the trails to neighbouring vleis such as Deadvlei, a silvery pan peppered with skeletal acacia trees believed to be over 500 years old.
