You can climb to the summit of Mt Teide, Tenerife’s crowning glory and Spain’s highest peak, where it is possible to spend the night and watch the sun rise over the Atlantic - an amazing experience. Or charter a boat, brave the choppy ocean waters and head off in search of pilot whales and bottlenose dolphins. Sightings here are as good if not better than anywhere in Europe.
Tenerife also boasts some first class resort hotels, and I was fortunate to stay at three of the best, each with five star facilities but each very different in style. My first port of call was the beautiful Gran Hotel Bahia Del Duque, set on the Costa Adeje and the perfect choice for families and couples who want everything on their doorstep - beaches, restaurants, shops etc.
Next up was the Hotel Botanico in the northern town of Puerto de la Cruz, directly opposite the island’s Botanical Gardens but hidden away in its own lush, subtropical gardens and boasting a superb Asian inspired spa.
And finally to the Ritz-Carlton, Abama. This fabulous spa resort is my pick for families with children of any age, but couples and adult only parties needn’t worry - Abama’s Tagor Villa complex offers the ultimate escape with its own private pool, complimentary drinks, daily breakfast at El Mirador and your own personal golf buggy to whisk you around the resort.
Tenerife really does have something for everyone."
