ONE OF CHINA’S NATIONAL TREASURES
The capital of the Sichuan Province, Chengdu is home to charismatic teahouses, a fiery cuisine and one of China’s national treasures – the giant panda. Dating back to the Qing Dynasty, the city is scattered with relics from its imperial past.
If you want to see giant pandas up close, then the Chengdu Research Base is a must. Located to the north of the city, this breeding and research centre works to protect and preserve these beautiful creatures and their diminishing habitat. Visit the centre early in the morning for a chance to witness the feeding sessions.
Enjoy strolls around Wangjilanglou Park, a tranquil space where you can relax under the shade of bamboo groves. The park is dotted with historic sites, including the Wangjiang Pavilion (or Chongli) which was built back in 1889. After you can take a seat at a traditional teahouse along the riverbank, sip on a cup of aromatic jasmine tea and watch locals play Mahjong.
Deemed a UNESCO City of Gastronomy, Chengdu is famed for its distinctive and spicy cuisine which you can sample for yourself at the local restaurants. The Sichuan hotpot is a particularly famous delicacy, as well as the fiery kung pao chicken.
Lying just beyond the outskirts of the city is the world’s largest stone Buddha. Carved into an immense mountain, the Leshan Giant Buddha measures over 70 meters tall and was originally built during the Tang Dynasty. Standing at the feet of the statue, the scale of this UNESCO-listed site will take your breath away.
