Sigiriya, otherwise known as the Lion Rock, is Sri Lanka’s best known land mark and a truly impressive archaeological site. Towering 200 metres above the central plains, this iconic rock fortress was originally carved in the shape of a lion, the shape and feet of which are still visible today. Climb the lion’s staircase to the top to find ancient frescoes, inscriptions and the remnants of a fifth century palace.
Explore the sacred city of Kandy on foot and discover its elaborately carved murals, shrines and beautiful architecture. The city is home to the Temple of the Tooth, a major pilgrimage site for Sri Lankan Buddhists which is said to house the tooth of Buddha in a golden casket.
