Hill Country

A world away from the rest of Sri Lanka.

Sri Lanka’s hill country is a world away from the rest of the island; here you will find cool mountain air, manicured tea plantations, jagged peaks and the time-worn remains of British rule.

A seemingly endless landscape of mist-shrouded hills scattered with quaint tea gardens and old British settlements, it’s hard not to be enchanted by the hill country.

Once an untamed sweep of jungle covered mountains, with the arrival of the British in the 19th century, the hill country’s potential for tea production was fully realized. Today Sri Lanka’s Ceylon tea is world-famous and recognized for its distinct aroma and quality. You can visit one of the working tea plantations to see the tea-making process in action, and sample the unique varieties yourself.

Lying in the shadow of Pidurutalagala, Sri Lanka’s tallest mountain, Nuwara Eliya has earned the nickname ‘Little England’ thanks to it’s charming colonial architecture. Enjoy scenic walks through tea plantations, take a tour of the tea factory or simply relax and enjoy the magnificence of the countryside.

If you’re feeling more adventurous consider a hike up Adam’s Peak, Sri Lanka’s fifth-highest mountain. Rising for over 2,000 meters above the surrounding hills, the climb up is a challenging one but well worth it for the jaw-dropping views from the summit. The mountain is also a holy pilgrimage site, thanks to a footprint at the peak which is claimed to have been left by the Buddha.
