Estancia Los Potreros – Tatler: The 101 best hotels in the world

Estancia Los Potreros in Córdoba, Argentina. Home-cooked dinners and exhilarating rides are on offer at the Begg family’s farm.

When most people think of riding in Argentina, they picture the flat open plains of the pampa. But less than an hour from Córdoba are the stunning green hills of the Sierras Chicas, across which Kevin Begg’s family has been cantering since the early 1900s, when his grandfather bought Los Portreros and its 6,500-acres as a retreat.

A working cattle farm, it now sleeps up to 12 guests at a time in delightfully simple single-story accommodation. Candle-lit dinners are communal and home-cooked; and adding to the nostalgic vibe, aperitifs are taken into the same cosy sitting room that Begg’s grad-father would have entertained in. But the real draw here is the riding. Even the least-experienced equestrian will feel at ease on what Begg proclaims are ‘the best horses in the world.’ And this being a genuine ranch, riding often has a practical as well as leisurely purpose: corralling cattle, say en route to a shady spot for Argentinian asado.

We can offer seven nights at Estancia Potreros, full board, from £4,950, including flights.
