Home to an astonishing array of flora and fauna.

Occupying the southern portion of Borneo, Kalimantan is a wildlife adventurer’s dream and perfect for those looking to get off the beaten track. Exploring this tropical rainforest gives you a chance to encounter an array of rare and unique species, including wild orangutans.

Believed to be over 130 million years old, the ancient rainforests of Kalimantan are exceptionally biodiverse. Living amidst the thick jungle are a mind-boggling array of species, from strikingly colored plants and insects to mammals found nowhere else on earth.

Most famous of all are the orangutans. Seeing these endangered species roaming freely in their natural habitat is truly special, and there are few places in Southeast Asia better than Kalimantan to do so. You can trek through the forest on foot, but a great way to get up-close encounters is by floating along the jungle’s network of rivers by boat. These are called Klotoks, which are traditional and authentic in their design, and range in their simplicity and semi -luxury.

Tanjung Putting National Park is the best-known park in the region, and as well as being a great place for orangutan encounters, it’s also a sanctuary for proboscis monkeys, wild boars, macaques and black-handed gibbons.

The rainforest is also home to the indigenous Dayak people, who have occupied this part of the world for many years. Taking a boat along Kalimantan’s waterways, you will see their longhouses perched along the riverbanks. These traditional dwellings, made from wood and bamboo, can house up to 200 families and are at the centre of community life.
