In Luang Prabang, the jewel of Indochina, time seems to stand still. One of the best-preserved cities in Southeast Asia, a visit here will transport you to a bygone era, complete with atmospheric temples and great processions of saffron-robed monks.

The spiritual heart and religious centre of Laos, Luang Prabang delights with its warm people, rich heritage and magical atmosphere. Situated along the Mekong River and surrounded by rolling green hills, it’s also a region of immense natural beauty.

The UNESCO-protected city is relatively small and lends itself well to on foot (or on bike) exploration, and you can happily spend a day or two uncovering its treasures.

The old French city allures with its faded colonial architecture, traditional Lao buildings, glittering monasteries and former Royal palace. A highlight is the ornate Wat Xieng Thong, the oldest and most beautiful temple in the city. If you rise early, you can experience the centuries-old tradition of alms giving to local monks, before venturing to the morning market to see lively trade in action.
