Bird Island, Seychelles

Honeymooners, beach lovers and naturalists – including David Attenborough – visit to revel in the natural beauty. But it’s the visiting birdlife that gives the island its name.

If you’re planning a honeymoon, or just want a relaxing break far away from the bustle of normal life, Bird Island should be on your radar.

The most northerly of the Seychelles Archipelago, this tiny coral cay is famed for its birdlife, with 24 recorded resident species and over 95 migratory visitors. Dolphins and rays swim close to the shore, while hawksbill and green turtles breed on the fine sandy beaches. The island can be comfortably explored on foot, with several marked trails weaving through the shady casuarina groves. The world’s most famous naturalist – Sir David Attenborough – has filmed here, and you will be similarly enchanted.

Nestling on an unspoiled beach, Bird Island’s only hotel is simply styled with few frills. It’s been run by the same family for over 40 years, and has always adhered to ecological principles. Today, it offers peace and tranquillity for a maximum of 50 guests, who stay in individual bungalows with rustic, island-style decor.
